The field of video production and editing has exploded over the years. This has been largely due to the availability of equipment and learning materials related to the field. As a result, more and more people are taking interest in filmmaking and giving it a try.

Film production involves filming, editing and distributing the finished product. The process may also be known as videography. Finished products can be used in commercials, television shows, movies, for corporate presentations or for personal enjoyment.

There are four main stages to producing a video. The first is the pre-production stage which involves planning all of the necessary elements of the film before any scenes are shot. Essentials involve developing a concept, creating a storyboard, looking for the necessary equipment and crew and stating a budget. A more detailed plan is necessary to reduce the number of difficulties during the next stages.

Next is the production phase. This is where the actual shooting of the scenes are performed. The number of people that get involved during the actual production phase can vary depending on the complexity of the project and the total budget. In some cases, hired cast and crew members may be willing to do the job for free or a minimal fee in exchange for film credit.

Post production involves editing the footage for the final product. A variety of film editing software and tools have been developed and released to cater to different types of individuals. Programs considered as industry standards are expensive and require time to learn. Individuals interested in doing basic edits and inserting a few simple transitions or effects may look for free or cheaper editing programs commonly available online.

Distribution is the final stage in video production. Finished products can be transferred to VHS tapes, VCD, DVD or Blu Ray discs. Another alternative is the Internet. This has given aspiring filmmakers a viable avenue where they could showcase their work to a larger audience for a smaller amount of money and effort. The use of social networking and video sharing websites are some of these online options.

Creating a video involves many steps and challenges. Even with all these challenges, the industry continues to grow, develop and include filmmakers from different backgrounds. The field of video production and editing remains to be of interest, allowing individuals to create their own films and present their works to the public.
